Crawling

The fog slowly cleared and the explorer sensed movement in the clearing around her. She froze, not wanting to give herself away to anything that might be watching. A few more seconds passed and the fog lifted above her head. Now she could see in front of her, but couldn’t spot any danger. Good. Slowly she looked to the side, moving only her head. All clear.  She took shallow breaths, feeling and tasting fear, but she deliberately turned to the other side, again, eyes only. A sudden low movement caught her eye and she inhaled sharply. She moved slowly away from the source of the movement, and everything stilled. All was silent. Perhaps the lifting fog had played a trick on her eyes.

But no. The movement started again, a crawling, wriggling motion – spider like, and low to the ground. The explorer’s senses tingled. Her adrenaline surged and she froze, poised in a pouncing stance. The under brush rustled and the explorer’s eyes went steel with fierce concentration. She absorbed every detail, every pattern of the movement and began to plan her attack. It would be low and fast – she’d sweep forward and lay waste to the still unidentified threat with sweeping blows of the nine inch blade she held in her hand.

High above, a hawk shrieked. The wind gusted suddenly and the under brush part, revealing the horrible creature moving steadily forward, threatening all with its gnarled limbs and fierce barbs. It was in constant motion, crawling over all who were in its path, clawing and grasping with determination.

The explorer readied her hand and swept out at the danger, quickly cutting away the root of its evil: weeding quickly and efficiently done, made much more exciting with a huge dose of atmosphere and imagination. Thank you Weed, that was fun!

Please come back tomorrow for a new “Weed Image of the Day” and let me know which ones you like.

We and our weeds are so much more than what we first appear to be.

    1. Thank you Jane! I usually try not to “kill” my weeds in my little stories, but I am always grateful that they manage somehow to push my creative button. I’m happy that you enjoyed it!

    1. Thanks Aina! I felt the Halloween spirit last night. I’d like to spend more time on these little bits and develop them into a longer format. All I need is quiet uninterrupted time….sigh!
