“You thought you got me. You thought you cut me down to size. You thought I’d never come back. But here I am, growing back, silly man.”
We think we have control over forces bigger than ourselves: nature, politics, public opinion, society. We can fight and fight against these forces, and we are wired to do so, but it is folly to think that we have succeeded in imposing our will on nature. This weed illustrates the wisdom of accepting the view that all forces rally in defiance of domination. Weeds grow back, vines spread, birds nest repeatedly in the spots you don’t approve of, and ants use detours to go around your deterrents. If we can find our place in communion with those with whom we disagree, I think we’ll find that we can be part of a dance of balance that is performed daily.
Today I shall be free, and think like a weed. Please come back tomorrow for a new “Weed Image of the Day” and let me know which ones you like.
We and our weeds are so much more than what we first appear to be.
