The remnants of Spring’s birth, Summer’s glory and Autumn’s mellow beauty lay before me, a stiff, feathered swirled rosette of silver leaves, frozen in their last flirty pose.The delicate leaves are no longer flexible and green but they still beckon with silver grey and brown tones and they still hold on to grace. The leaves look sinister – almost twisted at first glance, but challenge yourself to look past the perceived menace to see the inner beauty that still lingers long past Spring. What might a weed’s purpose be – to linger, stiffened in your former glory?
I know this weed will sprout new green shoots in just a month or two. And when it does, the new weed life will be enriched by the silver rosette. The spring version of this weed will be sheltered from rabbits who might want to nibble, taking away the fresh weed’s chance to grow tall. When drenching rains come that wash away soil and pummel new growth, the spring version of this weed will be rooted in a foundation laid last year with a strong structure to hold it in place. It looks to me that this Winter weed is looking forward to the promise of Spring, and new growth. What a beautiful thing. So although this silver rosette looks frozen in the past, its anticipation of the future is keeping it full of grace.
