In nature, signposts are everywhere, but we humans often don’t recognize the message they are trying to convey. Scents mark paths and tell stories, but we don’t speak the language, so are thus immune to their meaning. Paw prints and bits of fur mark a path, but our eyes are often looking off into the distance instead of focused at the immediate space in front of us. Hikers have mastered more keen powers of observation than casual pedestrians but even so, a trail marker is much appreciated. Always cheerful, this foxtail weed plays with the breeze in order to catch our eye and invite hardy adventurous spirits to embark on a side path and enjoy a private view of sky and greens.
Please come back tomorrow for a new “Weed Image of the Day” and let me know which ones you like.
We and our weeds are so much more than what we first appear to be.
